Pat Fenton is the nicest guy you could ever meet. I met him at the Allen Ginsberg commemorative organized by Al Aranowitz in Central Park. Pat read from one of his articles on Kerouac in Ozone Park, which is where Kerouac lived when he was composing most of his greatest and best-known works. He told a great story about going to the bar across the street from where Kerouac lived with his mother above the drug store, and imagined Kerouac going there for pitchers of beer. He asked the guy behind the bar if he had ever met Jack personally. "Who the hell is Jack Kerouac?" was the reply. "Living
History Weekend", a performance of a work on Jack Kerouac by Pat: The
Wizard of Ozone Park by Patrick Fenton - A look at Ozone Park, Queens,
New York (on Long Island not far from JFK airport), where Jack started
his first book, The Town and the City. In 'DHARMA BEAT', the definitive
Kerouac magazine published by Attila Gyenis. |
Pat Fenton is a great talker. He had long phone conversations with Jan Kerouac where she played him tapes of herself rapping and goofing. Pat told her "Your father used to do that all the time." Pat believes guilt over abandoning Jan was one of the things that led Jack to an early grave.
